CHI 198: Re-Imagining Migration, Re-Imagining Borders

CHI 198

CHI 198: Re-Imagining Migration, Re-Imagining Borders examines migration before, enroute, and upon arrival. We will begin by historicizing distinctions between "natives" and "migrants." From a global perspective, we will follow with an in-depth analysis of borders and border control, what Harsha Walia describes as "offshore border enforcement." We will follow with the question: how does this policing lead to human smuggling? The last two areas covered in class will include sanctuary enroute and migrant organizing "in an era of deportation and dispossession." Together, these themes and texts will allow us to understand migration and movement from a historical and broader perspective that will allow us to reimagine migration and borders.

This course is held TR 12:10-2pm (CRN: 56184). This letter graded, 4-unit course satisfies major and minor requirements.
